Ipcar loves the challenge of fitting a lot of things together into a whole pattern; indeed, she enjoys complexities. Sometimes she will retreat to something simpler, like the handsome (and humorous) watercolor Chicken Pot Pie, 1995, but it is only to take a temporary break from the more elaborate and often festive compositions.
Among the most mesmerizing works are a series of circular “mandala” paintings that highlight the wondrous variety of creatures found in habitats around the world: India, Africa, South America, the Australian outback, a Caribbean reef.15 Several of these paintings pay tribute to a particular species as in the extraordinary Cat Mandala, 1988, which features all manner of felines, from the house cat to the king of the jungle.
Fantasy and mythology also come into play in Ipcar’s animal canvases. Paintings such as The Island of King Minos, 1977, and Labyrinth, 2007, reference myths. She takes delight in creating her own worlds, as she does in the painting In the Land of Blue Tigers, 2007. She has done several fantasies related to chess boards and sometimes embraces the surreal as in May This House Be Safe From Tigers, 1978, and Outside In, 2008, in which, respectively, tigers, zebras, and a cheetah take up residence in the home.
